What if I haven't passes IELTS myself? Is this course suitable for me?
Yes, it will give you a comprehensive understanding of the way the exam is structured, which will also help you to get prepared for the exam yourself.
What if my English is not perfect?
Your level should be at least one band score above your student's.

Week 1
Module 1: Understanding Student Needs

  • Perform a detailed needs analysis on your students
  • Manage learner expectations for exam preparation
  • Dispel common misconceptions concerning IELTS

Weeks 2 & 3
Module 2: Teaching Speaking Skills

Followed by self-study content on our platform (video tutorials and other materials)

Live Session with Katy Muench on Speaking Skills (designing practical activities and dealing with student problems)
By the end of this module, you will:
  • Have a variety of practical activities to help learners successfully navigate the speaking exam
  • Know the best tips, techniques and strategies for each part
  • Understand when and how to correct learners, and what to focus on for pronunciation
  • Learn about how to foster a resourceful student mindset to encourage fluency
  • Be able to develop lessons that teach the sub-skills and provide a well-balanced approach to improving speaking overall

Week 4
Module 3: Developing Listening Skills

By the end of this module, you will:
  • Understand each part of the listening test in detail, as well as the question types
  • Know the best strategies for dealing with each question type
  • Learn the sub-skills of listening and how to teach them to your learners
  • Be able to anticipate and deal with common learner problems
  • Know how the exam is scored and be able to explain it to your students
  • Have a variety of useful tools and techniques for helping learners to understand connected speech

Weeks 5 & 6
Module 4: Teaching Writing Skills

Live Session with Siobhan Kizilkaya on Writing Part 1 and Common Student Problems

Followed by self-study content on our platform (video tutorials and other materials)

Live Session with Siobhan Kizilkaya on Writing Part 2 and Boosting student scores
By the end of this module, you will:
  • Understand requirements of each task in detail and how to prepare learners accordingly
  • Be equipped with a variety of practical activities to train learners to become more proficient writers
  • See a writing task done in front of you with strategies and reasoning explained step by step
  • Have quick tips for leveraging student strengths to boost writing scores quickly within a short period of time

Week 7
Module 5: Developing Reading Skills

By the end of this module, you will:
  • Know how to tailor a teaching approach for Reading to meet the needs of your students
  • Have a strategy for dealing each type of question in the Reading test
  • Learn how to develop lessons that teach the sub-skills of reading to your learners
  • Recognize common issues learners face with reading and be able to help them cope
  • Understand the importance of noticing techniques and how to apply them in your lessons
  • Be confident adapting exam tasks into full lesson

Week 8
Module 6: Assessing and Giving Feedback

Live with Kathy Panton on evaluating student work, integrating language and Q&A

By the end of this module, you will:
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the Speaking and Writing criteria, and how examiners differentiate between individual bands
  • Be confident about assessing your students and providing guideline scores
  • Understand how to standardize yourself in a similar way to examiners
  • Have tips for providing feedback in a positive and constructive manner that supports learner development
At the end of the course each participant will have a choice of task to complete and receive feedback from the tutors (lesson plan, or your assessment of a student's essay)
MEET YOUR TUTORS
  • Tyler Scharf
    ESL Teacher, CELTA trainer, Certified Coach
    Tyler Scharf is a teacher, trainer & motivational coach based in Istanbul. Born in Canada, he has 10 years of experience in the field of ELT. Throughout the years he had the chance to work in Russia, India and Turkey, where he got his full Delta and was working as a Celta & ICELT tutor, and with Oxford University Press. He is the founder and owner of Sharp English, an online language school that specializes in exam preparation.

    Now he is pursuing a career in coaching because he found that even talented teachers can be vulnerable in their practice and need motivational support in addition to methodology and technique. He specializes in empowering teachers and learners to gain a clearer sense of self and develop confidence in their practice and learning. He is a certified coach from Erickson International.


  • Katy Muench
    ESL Teacher, CELTA Trainer
    Katy is a British teacher trainer, materials developer, and exam specialist with over a decade of experience in various schools and universities, including Istanbul Technical University, Sheffield University, and University of East London.

    She has also trained hundreds of teachers for Cambridge Celta, Oxford University Press, and Express Publishing. Katy has extensive experience in exam preparation and assessment, and she is known to have the most creative solutions for lesson planning and material design.

    She has Delta M1, 2 and a BA in Journalism with honours.
  • Siobhan Kizilkaya
    ESL Teacher, Delta Trainer
    Siobhan is a teacher, trainer, and former assessor for Cambridge. She is originally from the UK but is now based in Istanbul. With decades of experience in the field of ELT, she has extensive expertise in training and assessment due to her roles as a teacher trainer for Cambridge Delta and ICELT courses.
  • Kathy Panton
    ESL Teacher & Trainer
    Kathy is a British-Canadian teacher currently working at Istanbul Technical University, where she has been a teacher, teacher trainer, and materials developer for over ten years. She received her Dip.TESOL in the UK and went on to work at several branches of the British Council as well as at both public and private schools. She has been involved in IELTS courses, training, and exams since 2002.
